***NEW (11/2013)***

Trembles is closed to submissions and queries until further notice.

Guidelines

Horror. Simple as that. To give you an idea of what to send, some authors we like are Brian Keene, Peter Straub, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Clive Barker, Shirley Jackson, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft and the darker stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne. We want stories that instill a deep feeling of dread and emotional terror. We want fiction that makes us look out the window after we are reading and wonder if something's there. We will accept stories with vampires, werewolves and all those classic tools of horror, but they better add something new to the genre.

Flash Fiction (1,000 words or less)
Short Story (1,001 to 6,000 words)
Poetry (up to 50 lines)

Flash Fiction 600

Trembles is also looking for flash fiction pieces 600 words or less to feature on the website. We want to post 1-2 per week, but that will depend on the quality of submissions received. There is no payment for pieces accepted for the online portion. We only ask that Trembles be allowed to host the story for one week and then collected in an archive section of the website. You will retain all rights. If you are submitting for the exclusive online section, then put "ff600" in the subject line somewhere.

Book Reviews

If you have a horror novel you'd like us to review, please query us at the e-mail below first. How soon we can get to your book depends on how busy we are. We are open to self-published works and novels released by independent publishers as well as those from commerical publishing houses. No novels-in-progess and books you are currently editing for publication please.

A review will be posted online at the website and on our Facebook page as soon as possible and a condensed version will be included in the print magazine following the online review. When querying, please let us know if you have a specific release date and we can work with you on getting your book reviewed around that time.

What We Don't Want

No erotica or short stories where most of the plot involves a sex scene. No stories that involve a character talking to someone who turns out to be a doll. No serial killer or blatant slasher stories. No gore just to put gore in your story (for examples of proper ways to add violence that makes for good fiction, read some of Richard Laymon's works). No sequences that turn out to be a dream (flash fiction pieces are usual culprits). Stories with bad dialogue or endings that don't fit the story.

No straight-up vampire or werewolve stories. Ghost stories are okay, but it has to be really, really clever. No stories that tell you everyone is a vampire or werewolf or ghost or some common supernatural creature halfway or near the end of the story.

Stories over 6,000 words.

We also don't want Science Fiction and Fantasy. Surprisngly, it has to be said.

Format

Please send manuscripts ONLY as a .DOC, .DOCX or .RTF attachment to trembleshorrormag@gmail.com with a cover letter in the body of an e-mail. Do not send your manuscript in the body of an e-mail, it will automatically be deleted. Poetry is the only exception: it can be in the body of an e-mail. Make sure your manuscript uses standard formatting like 12-pt New Time Roman font and double-spacing. On the first page of your manuscript, please include your name, address, phone and e-mail in the upper-left corner and the word count rounded to the nearest hundred in the upper-right.

Payment UPDATED 07/2013

Trembles provides a token payment of $3 for short stories and $1 for flash fiction (whether we use it for the website or in the magazine) and poetry in exchange for one time use. You will also receive a contributor’s copy in electronic form.
